âIs everything all right, Lorraine?â Kim peeked at me from the kitchen when I closed and locked the patio door behind me.
âMy stomachâs a little queasy, but I think Iâm all right.â The very thought of someone blaming Roy for Jennyâs disappearance roiled my stomach.
Kim held her wrist to my forehead. âNo fever. Youâd better get to bed and get some sleep. The night nurse will be here soon, if you start feeling worse.â She waited until I had slipped under the light cover on the living room couch before dimming the overhead dining room light and turning off the rest of the lamps.
I closed my eyes, but my thoughts kept me awake long after the nurse arrived. Who was behind all this? Could it be that former client who tried to outsmart Roy to protect his illegal business dealings? Or maybe someone convicted because of Royâs investigation? Maybe it was that man whose wife got the huge divorce settlement after Roy uncovered his multiple affairs.
No, somehow, it all linked back to my discovery of Jennyâs pendant and Roy solving the mystery of her disappearance. For the hundredth time, I chided myself for not pressing him harder to tell me whom he was meeting that day. But knowing the name wouldnât help without the evidence contained on that memory card. Since I alone knew of Royâs particular habit, the kidnapper had no reason to search for it. That must be why he was coming after me. Whoever it was believed I knew what the evidence proved. Anthony was right. I needed to figure out where Roy hid that thing. Find that and weâd have the answer to everything else.
Iâd searched Royâs office. If he hid it anywhere else in the house, it was charred and melted by now. Anthony could get access to the car and check it out thoroughly. But if it wasnât there, and it wasnât burned to a crisp, where could it possibly be?
Disjointed images of fire and death filled my dreams that night and I woke with the same sour stomach I had when I went to bed. The smells emanating from the kitchen made it worse. I certainly wasnât earning my keep with a swollen hand and an unsettled stomach. While Ruby managed some soda crackers and a little gelatin at breakfast, I sipped a cup of chamomile tea.
Was it my upset stomach that brought forth more misgivings about Anthony? Doubts continued to niggle at the back of my mind, much as I hated to admit it. I still questioned the wisdom of giving him all my ID and credit cards. How could I possibly know whether or not he was telling me the truth? What if heâs the man I should be running from?
I pulled back from considering such a thing. After the fire and losing Roy, the possibility of Anthony betraying me was too much to ponder.
Tom Jonesâs song, âWhatâs New Pussycat,â interrupted my thoughts.
Maxine wiped her fingers on a napkin, reached into the side pocket of her wheelchair, and pulled out her cell phone.
